Psychotherapy for Current College or College-Bound Students

Is a family member headed to college soon? Would you like to equip your student with the resources they need to thrive? Are you a current student looking for support?

The transition to college is both exciting and challenging for families and students. Psychotherapy for the college bound can help prepare students as they adjust to being away from familiar routines and sources of support. I work with students to develop strategies for connecting and forming positive relationships, and build tools for engaging with faculty and supportive campus resources. This approach can be tailored to students who have taken time off their studies and need to build coping resources for a return to campus. I also work with graduate students, those studying in the helping professions, and with adult learners returning to school.

Building strengths

By blending techniques from my psychotherapy training with experience as a professor and administrator, clients receive support through:

  • Identifying needs and understanding feelings

  • Developing positive relationships and healthy boundaries

  • Balancing academics, extracurricular activities, and the rest of life

  • Building self-esteem and a sense of identity

  • Coping with perfectionism and impostor phenomenon

  • Engaging with supportive resources for academics and well-being

  • Communicating with family

  • And more based on each individual client

Getting started and what to expect

The first step in this process is a short phone consultation call with a family member and/or student. From there, clients fill out a short online assessment and a few forms. We then arrange a first meeting to talk about specific needs and get started in creating a positive transition experience tailored for your student. Together, we work to identify skills and abilities that have have contributed to success so far, then build on those and discover new ways to adapt to the college environment. Expect a warm and supportive environment where clients have the space to talk and share openly. While most of my work is with the student, it may be helpful to have family members attend a session or two and we can discuss what works best for you.
